CLEAN WATER COMPLIANCE

General:

PAI Corporation (PAI) provides a broad range of services to tackle our clients’ water-related problems. Our government and commercial clients have recognized PAI’s outstanding performance and support in formal evaluations.

In response to CWA, NPDES, RCRA, TSCA, and CERCLA, PAI associates have provided: regulatory compliance support; surface water and groundwater investigations and characterizations; groundwater monitoring systems installation; wastewater treatability studies; wastewater treatment systems design, review, and upgrade analyses; drainage system surveys and inspections; and groundwater contamination prevention and cleanup guidance.

Specific Areas of Expertise:

Sampling
Characterization

Examples:

Waste Area Group 6 Surface Water and Groundwater Monitoring at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)

PAI performed water monitoring and sampling activities, including retrieving sampling data and manually collecting samples from wells, seeps, and springs on the 68-acre site.  BACK TO MENU

In-Situ Biodenitrification Process for Weldon Spring Site Remedial Action Project (WSSRAP)

PAI participated in the development of design options to manage high-nitrate, contaminated water in an on-site pit. PAI managed the treatability studies, the design and execution of pilot-scale tests, and oversaw the full-scale biodenitrification activities.  BACK TO MENU

Water Rights Survey at Nevada Test Site (NTS)

PAI analyzed and produced annual estimates of potential water consumption for 26 hydrographic basins of the Death Valley groundwater system.  BACK TO MENU

NPDES Compliance at the Y-12 Plant

PAI surveyed 723 buildings to verify routing of drainage systems and system discharge locations, assessed the condition of the buildings’ drainage systems, and updated drainage systems drawings.  BACK TO MENU

Interim Mercury Treatment Unit Upgrade at the Y-12 Plant

To address mercury-laden groundwater discharges into Upper East Fork Poplar Creek, PAI evaluated the technical and economic aspects of three plant upgrade options.  BACK TO MENU

E-Tunnel Contaminated Water Discharge Control at NTS

E-Tunnel is a closed underground test complex discharging radioactively contaminated water to the environment. PAI performed geologic investigations and designed and monitored hydrologic tests to reduce and control site discharge water.  BACK TO MENU

Oversight of Mobile Sump Water Treatment Plant (MSWTP) for WSSRAP

This plant supported site dismantlement activities and was relocated, as needed, to treat contaminated site water. PAI participated in the MSWTP design and oversaw fabrication, procedure development, startup, and operations.  BACK TO MENU

Environmental Assessment of Drainage Projects at the Mound Plant

PAI analyzed the environmental impact of three site drainage projects, which included site drainage control, off-site drainage containment, and stormwater treatment.  BACK TO MENU

Benchmark Evaluation of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Wastewater Treatment Facilities on the Oak Ridge Reservation

PAI evaluated DOE wastewater treatment facility operations at the Y-12 Plant, ORNL, and East Tennessee Technology Park. The evaluations included the selection of industrial benchmarks, walkdown and review of DOE facility operations, and a comparison of the two.  BACK TO MENU

Pollution Prevention Opportunity Assessment (PPOA) at Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant

PAI prepared a PPOA of wastewater carbon filter usage and evaluated the handling of legacy carbon. PAI compiled and reviewed the facility waste stream data, identified options for carbon reactivation and waste generation reduction, estimated cost savings, and prepared a high-value-return-on-investment cost justification.  BACK TO MENU

Groundwater Investigation of the Atomic City Auto Parts Site

This site was contaminated by scrap metal bought from the Atomic Energy Commission. PAI managed the site investigation and characterization, including groundwater monitoring, well installation, and collection and analysis of surface water and groundwater samples.  BACK TO MENU
